Dear Colleagues,
A French friend of mine is getting married in Ireland with his Irish partner.
He will receive his "Certificat de Coutume" (official French document showing he is free to marry) tomorrow and asks me if I can translate this document into English. So far, so good.
Does anyone know (with certainty) what type of translation is required for weddings taking place in the Republic of Ireland?

UK normally accepts translations coming with a certificate written by the translator himself; France often asks for "certified translations" provided by translators registered with a court of justice. Ireland, I could not find out with certainty.
I would call the Irish Embassy or Consulate: no one is better placed than them to answer your question...

The groom asked.Answer was woolly: a translation with a certificate of the translator and a link ti the translation agency website should suffice. Don't like woolly. So asking the Proz community, as legal linguists in Ireland may have a definite view on this. Cheers!

Thanks for this info, useful.
It says that the couple will have to fill in a declaration stating there is no impediment to them getting married, but it is not quite clear about what kind of supporting documents – if any – is required.

I'll go with the request from the groom, who told me "we should be OK with a translation with a self certification from the translator". I am just being paranoid (being French, our administration is notoriously document hungry and inflexible), so I simply try to mine-sweep he possible scenarios.
