Launched in 2012 and was our first venture in North America. Located in Randall’s Island Park, Manhattan, the fair occupies a substantial site and has approximately 200 galleries and a slightly larger public of 150K visitors.
The tent itself, here viewed from above claims to be the largest on earth. In 2013 the Guiness Book of World Records documented it to have the largest temporary stage floor in the world!
In New York the fair responds to its host city by focussing on key activities or communities in the city. In the early years of the fair, curator Cecilia Alemani dedicated her Frieze Projects to a tribute series, recreating key exhibitions or non profit spaces from NY’s history. From Gordon Matta-Clark’s legendary 70’s FOOD restaurant to Maurizio Cattelan recreating his first ever NY show where he placed a mule in the gallery before it was closed down by the police for anti-social noise complaints!
Frieze Masters – the historical fair, which also launched in 2012 and made a significant impact in the art market, placing works from antiquity alongside modern art. In 2012 that was a totally unique concept and has gone on to influence the auctions with the spectacular inclusion of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi in a contemporary evening sale, to Victoria Bekham launching her fashion concept store with a series of Old Master paintings on view.
The concept of Frieze Masters is to place a contemporary lens on historical art. Incorporating art from Antiquity to the year 2000, it includes categories such as Old Master painting, Vintage Photography, Ethnographic art, Antiquity, Asian Art and Artefacts, Old Master prints and drawings and of course, Modern Art.
There is a huge effort made by the galleries to communicate the art of the past and we’ve seen extraordinary presentations from the now infamous recreation of Jean Debbufet’s studio in the Insane Asylum in which he was incarcerated by Helly Nahmad Gallery to Pop artist Richard Hamilton studio assembled in full on his gallery Waddington’s stand.
Exploring the idea of relooking at historical art anew, our Frieze Masters talks programme features contemporary artists in conversation with Museum Directors exploring historical collections. Here is eminent painter Cecily Brown speaking with the former Director of the National Gallery Dr Nicholas Penny.
Frieze Sculpture – London’s largest display of contemporary art in the Regent’s Park which remains on view for three months and is free to the public. The conception of Frieze Sculpture was intended to provide a high-quality experience for all Londoners and tourists alike and give artists one of the most high-profile platforms in the city to show their work. The Regent’s Park has around 5m visitors to its park across the summer months, strategically located in the heart of London it has much higher volume of park users than most other parks in the city.
In the park visitors could download for free an Audio Tour of the presentation onto their phone which had 18K users across the period. Or pick up a free Family Guide on the weekend and take part in several free workshops for children, which encouraged their responses to the works on display.
Frieze Sculpture remains on view until October, so in many senses it functions as a teaser event before Frieze London, which leads me to Frieze Week this year….
Frieze Week is now common parlance for the wide activity that takes place around the fair in the city, from gallery openings to museum previews, dinners, performances and book signings it really is an incredible schedule of activity.
Alongside the city activity, Frieze also plays a role activating the week for different audiences that might not be able to attend the fair, either as invited guests or ticket holders.
Ensuring that we have a widest possible-audience and provide an opportunity for different people to engage in the rich array of culture on offer is really important to us. As a private tenant of a public park, providing access moments to the incredible convening activity of the fair is essential to show the benefit we give to the city. Frieze Sculpture is a wonderful opportunity to do this, but alongside we have developed some other strands which provide aspect to some of the more intellectual conversations taking place in this moment.
This year we partnered with BBC Radio to host a museum debate with eminent Museum Directors. Asking the question “How do Encyclopaedic Museums make 1000s of years of art history relevant to contemporary audiences” we invited Michael Govan, Director LACMA, Sabine Hartwig, Director Kunsthistoriches Museum Vienna and Hartwig Fischer, Director of British Museum to discuss this in front of a live audience and for subsequent radio broadcast. Partnering with the BBC gave us access to a National audience of listeners in the millions and the content remains available now, as a podcast from their wenbsite which reaches global audiences of 372 million people.
The Frieze Art and Architecture Conference takes place during Frieze Week and is a stand-alone conference off site. The Conference brings together Museum leaders, Private Foundations, Architects and Artists debating the role of architecture in major cultural projects. Past speakers included Shigeru Ban, David Adayje, Amanda Levete, Sir David Chipperfield alongside artists and designers Andrea Zittel, Thomas Heatherwick and Martino Gamper.
Frieze London this year saw the largest amount of performance than ever seen before, this is in part due to our curated sections but also to our reformatted Artist Award, which was won by Polish artist Alex Baczynski Jenkins. The FAA was relaunched as a collaboration with London residency programme Delfina, to provide an opportunity for a young artist, not yet represented by a gallery to make a new work at Frieze benefitting from the extraordinary visibility of the fair’s professional and public audience. Performance as a medium is one of the least visible practices seen at art fairs, partly due to the costs involved in staging works and practical considerations of showing performance in a fair context. We felt it would be productive to support artists working in performance as their work is the least supported in the entire eco system from prizes to major exhibitions.
The response was overwhelming with over 500 applicants, Alex Baczynski Jenkins was selected by our jury and he conceived of a choreographed piece in which several performers engaged in what he terms “furious dancing” inside a dimly light space, resembling something of a club.
Another way we reintroduced more experimental work into the fair is through a new section called
LIVE
This gallery section at Frieze that is curated by Diana Campbell Betancourt and brought several performance-based works into non-gallery spaces at the fair. Popping up in surprising places, from the bookshop to the tours desk, the works engaged with the hidden systems of circulation and consumption at the fair. Several of the works were specially commissioned for Frieze and supported by their galleries showcasing a rare commitment to galleries bringing this kind of ambitious work to an art fair.
One of the reasons we continue to programme sections like LIVE is to give visibility to artists who make work that might not be typical or too difficult to show on a gallery stand. And to work with galleries who do not even participate in the fair, providing them with an exciting non-traditional environment to support their artists. Some of the highlights included:
Laure Provost cast an Opera Singer to perform overheard comments around the public areas of the fair.
Julia Scher revisited an iconic work from the early nineties in which she cast female senior citizens in the role of alternative security guards to patrol the fair.
Audiences to the fair could use these free payphones as imagined by Camille Henrot that gave out free life advice to the users.
One of the new commissions was produced by Liz Glynn whose dance performance tracked the rumours taking place at the fair. Galleries and VIPs were encouraged to WhatsApp message the artist with sales rumours from which she directed her performers to dance on a grid.
Memorable Solo Stands
The fair continues to be a place where artists want to debut new work and this is particularly evident each year when galleries commit to making ambitious solo stands this year included Jim Shaw with Simon Lee Gallery, Tatiana Trouve’s epic installation which saw a 90 ton cast bronze tree trunk smashed through a cast concrete floor with her gallery Kamel Mennour and this incredibly detailed and vast installation by Ouyang Chun with Shangart.
Supporting Younger Galleries
When thinking about the entire eco system of the art world one of the stages we pay a lot of attention to is the experience of the younger galleries.
Focus is a subsidised destination section we put together for galleries under 15 years of age. This group of galleries are the future, they will define the landscape to come, the artist we know and create new models for exhibiting and producing art. There is no question, the landscape has shifted dramatically in the past twenty years and for today’s young dealers the next ten years will be completely different. The speed and pace of business has been accelerated by digital technology, young dealers are expected to global and compete on a world stage and yet traditional gallery audiences are shrinking and the emerging art market is contracting.
The issues facing younger galleries are completely different to those in the main section where galleries who have been established in the past twenty, thirty and even forty years have mature business models, investment and may even own their buildings.
We can drive interest in these galleries in various ways, our Stand prizes are delivered by a juror of international curators who review the section and decided on the most deserving presentation. A new initiative launched this year was the Camden Arts Center Emerging Art Prize. This prize is funded by young collectors as a way of their supporting their own generation of artists. Selected from the Focus section the Director of Camden Arts Center and his curators chose one artist to deliver their first UK public museum show. The winner this year was Wong Ping, shown here by Edouard Malingue Gallery HK. The prize is a very direct way for the fair to create an impact for the younger artists, as early museum exhibitions are often more meaningful than sales.
Themed Sections
Three years ago, we began a special section at Frieze London to reinsert content and thematic ideas to the fair. The sections are always invitational and selected by a guest curator who defines a particularly relevant or timely topic.
The focus in the past two years, has been on women artists. Last year’s Sex Work – Feminist Art and Radical Politics was conceived by art historian Alison M Gingeras. It included explicit works by artists working in the 60s and 70s who had been marginalised due to the content of their work, or societal pressures.
For 2018, coinciding with the UK’s 100th anniversary of women gaining the vote, we felt it was important to continue the theme, with a contemporary update on women artists this time, focussed on mid-career female artists, who are of the most overlooked artists in the art market.
Selected by a group of 12 eminent art historians, curators, art critics and editors the section included both well-known figures like Nancy Spero or Mary Kelly but also introduced lesser known figures like Berni Searle or Ipek Duben. The response was extraordinary. It included front covers in the Financial Times and New York Times and news coverage from national broadcasters like BBC.
Museum Funds
And finally, we are very proud of our Museum Funds which operate at the fair. The TATE FRIEZE FUND, was an important early model, now widely adopted at fairs worldwide, that allows for a major museum to acquire works for their collection at the fair. Over the past ten years over 100 works have entered the TATEs national collection through the fund, including their first ever piece of Performance Art – By Roman Ondak.
More recently we have added the Contemporary Art Society Acquisition Fund at Frieze, which provides a regional UK museum the ability to buy work for their collection on a scale completely impossible outside of their usual funding circumstances.
Frieze Talks
Our public programme which I have mentioned earlier is one of the reasons we have such a loyal public that attends the fair each year. The Frieze Talks programme is a key component of this, by bringing exceptionally high-quality speakers in the form of artists, philosophers, film makers, fashion designers and creatives to give key note lectures on their work. This year was particularly memorable with veteran photographer Nan Goldin and NY Performance legend Laurie Anderson. The talks are recorded and made available as pod casts.
Non-Profit Partners.
The fair is a great opportunity for us to share the momentum and critical focus of our audience with Non-Profits and museums. Allied Editions pictured here is a stand we offer to the London museums to showcase and sell prints and multiples to benefit their programmes. It is truly affordable art with iPhone cases from £50 through to fine art prints for a few hundred. Over the past five years the consortium have raised over ½ million pounds – which is extremely significant as it is unrestricted funding.
Save the Date
It’s almost, the close of the year, but I want to ask you to look ahead and save the date for Frieze Los Angeles which opens on 14 February, Valentines Day at the Paramount Picture Studios, Hollywood.
Los Angeles has the highest Korean diaspora community of any of the US States and we will be working with a really interesting group of LA based curators called GYOPO - this coalition will be activating our programme, to coincide with the inaugural fair, so watch this space and if you can come please do let me know !

프리즈 재단은 2012년에 처음 북미로 진출하여 프리즈 뉴욕을 개최했다. 뉴욕 맨해튼의 랜들스 아일랜드 파크에서 열리는 이 아트페어는 상당한 규모를 자랑한다. 200여곳의 아트 갤러리들이 다양한 작품을 선보이고 있으며 15만 명 이상이 이곳을 방문하고 있다.
상공에서 내려다보면 지구상에서 가장 큰 텐트 전시장이 눈에 들어온다. 이 텐트는 세상에서 가장 큰 가설 건물로 2013년도 기네스북에 오르기도 했다!
프리즈 뉴욕은 도시 내 주요 활동이나 커뮤니티에 초점을 맞추어 개최 도시와 시너지 효과를 낸다. 초기에는 큐레이터 세실리아 알마니가 프리즈 프로젝트를 진행하면서, 1970년대에 고든 마타-클락(Gordon Matta-Clark)이 운영했던 전설적인 레스토랑 푸드(FOOD)에서 살아있는 당나귀를 전시한 탓에 소음문제로 경찰에 신고되어 막을 내린 마우리치오 카텔란의 첫 뉴욕 전시회까지, 뉴욕 역사상 큰 획을 그었던 전시와 비영리 공간을 재현해냈다.

우리가 라이브와 같은 섹션을 지속적으로 계획하는 이유 중 하나는 일반적이지 않거나 갤러리에 전시되기 힘든 작품을 만드는 예술가들을 더 많이 노출시키기 위함이다. 또한 예술가들을 지원하기 위해 흥미롭고 전통적이지 않은 환경을 제공하여 페어에 참여하지 않는 갤러리들과 작업하기 위해서이기도 하다. 몇 가지 흥미로웠던 작품을 소개하고자 한다.
로레 프로보(Laure Prouvost)는 오페라 가수를 섭외하여 페어의 공공 공간에서 엿들은 잡담을 노래하는 퍼포먼스를 기획했다.
줄리아 셰어(Julia Scher)는 보안요원으로는 적합해 보이지 않은 노인 여성을 섭외하여 페어를 순찰하도록 하는 90년대 초기의 상징적인 작업을 다시 선보였다.
관람객들은 까미유 앙로(Camille Henrot)가 인생에 대한 조언을 해주는 무료 공중전화를 이용할 수 있었다.

미술 세계의 전반적인 생태계를 고려해볼 때 우리가 특히 주목하는 무대는 신규 갤러리들의 경험이다.
포커스 섹션에서는 설립된 지 15년 이하의 갤러리들이 보조금을 지급받아 전시를 진행한다. 이 갤러리들은 미래이다. 이들은 앞으로의 지표를 제시하고 우리가 알고 있는 미술가들을 정의할 것이며, 전시를 하고 미술품을 만드는 새로운 방식을 창조해낼 것이다. 지난 20년간 지표가 극적으로 바뀌었다는 사실과 오늘날의 젊은 딜러들이 앞으로 10년간 완전히 새로운 국면을 맞이할 것이라는 데에 의문을 제기할 이는 없을 것이다. 디지털 기술은 미술 업계의 변화의 속도를 가속시켰고, 젊은 딜러들이 세계 무대에서 경쟁할 수 있기를 기대하지만 기존 갤러리의 관람객은 점점 줄고 있으며 미술 시장은 축소되고 있는 판국이다.
신생 갤러리들이 직면하고 있는 문제는 비즈니스와 투자 모델이 정착되고, 심지어는 단독 건물을 가지고 있을지도 모르는 20년이나 30년, 어쩌면 40년 전에 설립된 갤러리들이 겪고 있는 문제와는 완전히 다르다.
우리는 다양한 방식으로 신생 갤러리들에게 관심을 쏟는다. 섹션을 검토하고 가장 훌륭한 전시를 보여준 갤러리를 결정하는 국제 큐레이터 심사위원단이 포커스 스탠드 상을 전달한다. 올해부터는 캠든 아트 센터의 떠오르는 미술 상(the Camden Arts Center Emerging Art Prize)이 새로이 도입되었다. 이 상은 자신의 세대를 지원하는 차원에서 젊은 콜렉터들이 기금을 모금하고 있다. 캠든 아트 센터의 관장과 큐레이터들은 포커스 섹션에서 한 예술가를 선정해 첫 영국 공공 박물관 쇼에 출연시켰다. 올해의 우승자는 홍콩 에드와 말딩 갤러리(Edouard Malingue Gallery HK)의 웡 핑(Wong Ping)이다. 박물관 전시에 일찍 데뷔하는 것이 작품을 판매하는 것보다 더 의미 있는 일이 되기도 하기에, 이 상은 페어가 젊은 예술가들에게 매우 직접적으로 영향을 주는 수단이다.
테마 섹션(Themed Sections)
3년 전, 페어에 다시 콘텐츠와 주제별 아이디어를 포함시키기 위해 프리즈 런던에서 특별한 섹션을 시작하였다. 섹션들은 항상 초청받은 갤러리나 외부 큐레이터가 시기상 적절한 특정 주제로 구성했다.
지난 2년간 포커스 섹션은 여성 예술가들을 다뤘다. 작년에는 앨리슨 엠 진저래스(Alison M. Gingeras)가 성 작업, 페미니스트 미술과 급진주의(Sex Work– Feminist Art and Radical Politics) 전시를 구상했다. 작품의 맥락이나 사회적 압박으로 인해 과소평가되었던 6,70년대 예술가들의 노골적인 작품이 이 전시에 포함되었다.
활동 중인 현 세대의 여성 예술가들은 미술 시장에서 소외되고 있다. 영국의 여성 참정권 획득 100주년을 맞은 올해, 이와 같은 여성 예술가들을 포함시켜 여성과 관련된 주제를 계속 이어나가는 것이 중요하다고 생각했다.
열두 명의 미술사가, 큐레이터, 미술 비평가, 에디터들로 구성된 인사들은 섹션에 낸시 스페로(Nancy Spero)나 메리 켈리(Mary Kelly)와 같은 저명한 인물들 뿐만 아니라 상대적으로 덜 알려진 베르니 설(Berni Searle), 이펙 뒤벤(Ipek Duben)과 같은 인물들도 선정하였다. 반응은 엄청났다. 파이낸셜 타임즈와 뉴욕 타임즈의 앞면을 장식했고 BBC와 같은 공영방송에 보도되기도 했다.
박물관 기금(Museum Funds)
우리는 페어를 운용하는 박물관 기금에 무한한 자부심을 느낀다. 현재 전 세계의 페어에 채택되어 대형 박물관이 컬렉션을 위해 페어에서 작품을 얻을 수 있도록 도와주는 테이트 프리즈 기금(TATE FRIEZE FUND)이 이 기금의 초기 모형으로서 중요한 역할을 했다. 지난 십 년간 로만 온닥(Roman Ondak)의 최초의 퍼포먼스 작품을 포함한 100점이 넘는 작품이 이 기금을 통해 테이트의 국가 컬렉션에 추가되었다.
최근에는 컬렉션을 채울 작품을 구매하려고 할 때 자금이 부족한 영국의 지역 박물관들을 도와줄 수 있는 현대 미술 사회 획득 기금(Contemporary Art Society Acquisition Fund)을 프리즈 페어에 추가했다.
프리즈 토크(Frieze Talks)
앞서 언급한 우리의 공공 프로그램은 매년 충실히 페어를 방문하는 대중들이 존재하는 이유 중의 하나다. 프리즈 토크는 공공 프로그램의 핵심 요소이며 예술가, 철학자, 영화 제작자, 패션 디자이너, 작가 등 매우 수준 높은 인사들이 자신의 작품에 대해 강연한다. 올해는 베테랑 사진작가 난 골딘(Nan Goldin)과 뉴욕의 전설적인 퍼포머 로리 앤더슨(Laurie Anderson)이 강연자로 초대되어 특히 인상적이었다. 토크는 녹화되어 팟캐스트로 이용 가능하다.
비영리 협력체(Non-Profit Partners.)
페어는 관람객이 관심을 기울이는 부분과 성장가능성을 비영리 단체 또는 박물관들과 공유할 수 있는 좋은 기회다. 아래에 나와있는 그림은 그들의 프로그램에 도움이 되는 사진과 미술품을 진열하여 판매하도록 런던의 박물관들을 위해 제공한 가판대이다. 50유로 상당의 아이폰 케이스도 있고 미술품도 몇 백 유로면 구입이 가능하다. 지난 5년간 컨소시엄은 25백만 파운드 이상의 수익을 냈고, 이 기금은 제한이 없기 때문에 아주 중요한 성과라고 할 수 있다.
