Source text - English Despite all the troubles it currently faces, global warming might be considered as the major challenge of the African continent. However, the fight against climate change could be the solution to many problems Africa has always had difficulties to deal with; provided action is taken now.
In recent years, Africa has finally ignited its economic engine. Accross the continent, governments and private investors are funding new industry and, more importantly, infrastructure - including ports, bridges, schools and hospitals. This growth is both a result of the continent's growing wealth and a means to ensure the prosperity continues.
However, the decision-makers behind this growth are blind to one critical, long-term consideration: climate change. Many African leaders claim they are building for the future of the continent - infrastructure to further trade and transportation, telecom networks and broadband to increase connectivity, and educational and healthcare facilities to improve quality of life for everyday Africans - but any thoughts for the future of the African continent must be filtered through the ever-present lens of global warming.
Africa's vulnerability
Of all the regions on earth, Africa is most susceptible to climate change. Check any top 10 list on the topic, and there will be African nations dotting it. This is because the continent, for the most part, has the one-two knockout combination of a high vulnerability to climate change’s deleterious effects, and they also lack the capability or adaptability to respond in case of a climate disaster.
Of course, Africa has much more pressing concerns. An estimated 30-40% of the African population lives in poverty, more than 10% are unemployed, and education and health care continue to be a major concern. But it is important to remember that all of these economic and social considerations are threatened by climate change. A violent flood will not only derail trade routes and industrial infrastructure, but it will also threaten schools and hospitals, and thus quality of life and social stability. Similarly, a severe drought threatens not just a nation’s food safety, but it also affects the millions of farmers around Africa, a continent that remains over-reliant on agribusiness. Climate change in general is thought of as something that destroys the natural environment, but it can also tear apart to the social, political and economic fabric in its path.
Opportunities not to be missed
While there is certainly a problem with the way the dangers of climate change are being translated to African decision-makers, in which scientists and climatologists can become pedantic and overly technical, there are more pressing problems at hand. In their meeting in Kenya in February, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) noted that the climate situation in Africa is « alarming » and that action must be taken by 2020.
A perfect opportunity for action is coming in December, when the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will hold its conference of parties in Paris. Ahead of that meeting, Africans will have at least one more chance to unite and draft common goals ahead of that global convention. The Climate South Initiative (CSI) will take place in Libreville, Gabon, in late May. The summit will prioritize a results-based approach to climate change, teaching Africans of the dangers of climate change so the continent can approach Paris with a plan of action to take control of their own destiny in the climate fight.
Climate change is squarely in Africa’s blind spot. And while it is ultimately important that the message of climate danger translates properly and filters down to all levels, the decision-makers at the top of the pyramid must start enacting fundamental change now. For the planet, that starts in Paris; for Africa, it starts in Gabon.

Depuis quelques années, le moteur économique de l’Afrique est en marche. États et investisseurs privés financent à travers tout le continent de nouvelles industries et, surtout, des infrastructures : ports, ponts, écoles et hôpitaux. Cette croissance, qui résulte de l’enrichissement grandissant du continent, permet de garantir sa prospérité à long terme.
Toutefois, les décideurs restent sourds à une préoccupation majeure et durable : le changement climatique. De nombreux leaders africains prétendent investir pour le futur du continent, en bâtissant des infrastructures pour faciliter les échanges commerciaux et les transports, en développant les télécommunications et le haut-débit pour généraliser l’utilisation d’Internet, et en construisant des établissements éducatifs et de santé pour améliorer la vie quotidienne des Africains. Pourtant, tout projet de développement sur le sol africain devrait tenir compte de la problématique omniprésente du réchauffement climatique.
L’Afrique, un continent vulnérable
En effet, non seulement l’Afrique est particulièrement vulnérable aux effets néfastes du changement climatique, mais elle manque également de moyens et de flexibilité pour faire face à une éventuellement catastrophe climatique. Ces deux composantes font du continent l’une des régions du globe les plus sensibles au changement climatique : toutes les listes recensant les pays les plus touchés par ce phénomène placent des pays africains dans leur top 10.
Évidemment, l’Afrique est actuellement confrontée à des problèmes bien plus urgents. Environ 30 à 40 % de la population vit dans la pauvreté et plus de 10 % est sans emploi. De plus, l’éducation et la santé constituent encore des préoccupations majeures. Pourtant, il ne faut pas oublier que tous ces enjeux sociaux et économiques sont directement concernés par le changement climatique. Une terrible inondation mettrait non seulement en péril les routes commerciales et les infrastructures industrielles, mais également les écoles et les hôpitaux, menaçant de ce fait la qualité de vie et la stabilité sociale de la région. De même, une forte sécheresse fragiliserait la sécurité alimentaire de la population, mais compromettrait aussi l’activité de millions de fermiers partout en Afrique – continent dont l’économie repose encore en majeure partie sur l’agriculture. Pour beaucoup d’entre nous, le changement climatique est un mal qui détruit l’environnement, mais n’oublions pas qu’il emporte également le tissu social, économique et politique sur son passage.
Des occasions à ne pas manquer
Il y a certainement des progrès à faire pour sensibiliser davantage les décideurs africains aux dangers du changement climatique, et il est vrai que les scientifiques et les climatologues expliquent parfois les phénomènes de manière doctorale et trop technique. Mais malgré tout, le temps presse : le Groupe d’experts intergouvernemental sur l’évolution du climat (GIEC) qui s’est réuni au Kenya en février dernier a rapporté que la situation climatique en Afrique était alarmante et que des actions concrètes devaient être mises en place d’ici 2020.
Justement, l’occasion d’agir pourrait bien se présenter au mois de décembre prochain, lors de la conférence des parties de la Convention-Cadre des Nations Unies sur les changements climatiques (CCNUCC) qui se déroulera à Paris. Avant ce sommet, les Africains auront la possibilité de se réunir et de définir des objectifs communs lors de la Climate South Initiative (CSI) qui se tiendra fin mai à Libreville, au Gabon. Ce sommet repose sur une approche axée sur les résultats et vise à sensibiliser les Africains aux dangers du changement climatique. L’objectif étant que les pays d’Afrique se rendent à Paris avec un plan d’action concret, pour prendre en main leur avenir et passer à l’action dans le combat pour le climat.
Le changement climatique constitue réellement le talon d’Achille de l’Afrique. Bien qu’il soit primordial que chacun, à son niveau, comprenne les dangers d’un tel phénomène, c’est aux décideurs qui se trouvent au sommet de la pyramide de prendre dès maintenant des mesures drastiques. Le monde entier aura les yeux rivés vers Paris en décembre ; mais pour l’Afrique, tout commence au Gabon.

Source text - English After editors at SAOL (Svenska Akademiens ordlista), the Swedish dictionary, announced that ‘Hen’, a gender-neutral pronoun would be officially added to the 2015 edition, the reaction in Sweden has been broadly accepting.
However, there have been some concerns raised about the impact this new word could have.
In 2012, Swedish journalist Nathalie Rothschild wrote an article on Slate, which seemed to suggest that Sweden was on the slippery slope to banning any sort of gender distinctions, and 'hen' was the latest step on this path:
“Many are pushing for the Nordic nation to be not simply gender-equal but gender-neutral. The idea is that the government and society should tolerate no distinctions at all between the sexes.”
Citing a number of trends from to introduction of same-sex toilets to the horror of gender-neutral bowling tournaments, Rothschild argues that the conventional male-female distinction is in danger of being eradicated in Sweden.
An extra tool in the toolbox
So are we seeing some covert form of social engineering to create a gender-neutral society? Or could it just be that Sweden is slowly becoming more accepting to people who choose to identify with a third gender?
Well, the whole debate began after a children’s book used ‘hen’ rather than ‘he’ or ‘she’ throughout. Jesper Lundqvist, the author of the book, which is called Kivi och Monsterhund (Kivi and Monsterdog), quelled the fears of gender-based conservatives:
“Certain people think that it's about removing "hon" and "han", but it's not. It's more about having an extra tool in the toolbox and being able to choose.”
In English, it would be like popularising or promoting the use of “they” and “their” instead of ‘he/she’ and ‘his/her’. As Niklas Jakobsson, a Swedish journalist based in Amsterdam, tells me, “The word itself is useful when used in the right context and situation. I personally use it when it's unclear what sex a person is, or you don't want to reveal the sex for whatever reason. I've seen it misused by the media in order to attract views and clicks, blurring out images and saying, "Hen will be the next..." As people we should not be defined by our gender so in that sense I think the word itself is good. But then again, people should be allowed to identify themselves in whichever way they want and Hen should be used when that's the preferred choice of the person.”
Of course, language is only one way to promote inclusiveness and greater gender equality. For example, the Turkish language also has a gender-neutral pronoun, o, which covers ‘he’, ‘she’ and ‘it’ from English. Bangladesh has also recently recognised a third gender identity, Hijra.
Yet, no one would argue these nations are among the most gender-inclusive, ranking 125th and 68th respectively in the 2014 gender equality report from the World Economic Forum. Sweden was ranked 4th, behind Nordic neighbours Iceland, Finland and Norway.
As Lundqvist would say, language is just one more tool in the toolbox as we try to make society more gender-equal and inclusive.
To that, I’d say: hen har rätt.

Si les Suédois se montrent globalement ouverts à cette idée, l’impact de ce nouveau mot suscite néanmoins quelques inquiétudes.
Pour la journaliste suédoise Nathalie Rothschild, le pays est sur la mauvaise pente. Dans un article paru sur Slate en 2012, elle laisse entendre que la Suède est sur le point d’abolir toutes les distinctions liées aux genres, « hen » constituant la dernière étape en ce sens : « De nombreuses personnes font pression pour que la Suède dépasse l’égalité des genres et devienne totalement neutre. Dans cette optique, les pouvoirs publics et la société ne devraient plus tolérer aucune distinction entre les sexes ».
La journaliste cite plusieurs tendances, comme l’apparition de toilettes destinées indifféremment aux personnes des deux sexes ou l’organisation d’affreux tournois de bowling mixtes, pour démontrer que la distinction conventionnelle entre les hommes et les femmes risque de totalement disparaître de Suède.
Une nouvelle carte en main
S’agit-il d’une forme indirecte d’ingénierie sociale visant à instaurer la neutralité des genres au sein de la société ? Ou bien la Suède deviendrait-elle tout simplement plus tolérante envers les personnes se réclamant d’un troisième genre ? Le débat remonte à la parution d’un livre pour enfants, Kivi och Monsterhund (Kivi et le chien monstrueux), dans lequel le pronom neutre « hen » est utilisé à la place de l’équivalent de « il » ou « elle ». L’auteur, Jesper Lundqvist, dissipe les craintes des conservateurs : « Certains pensent que l’objectif est de supprimer les pronoms « hon » (elle) et « han » (il), mais pas du tout. Il s’agit plutôt de disposer d’une nouvelle carte en main pour choisir le pronom qui semble le plus approprié. » En français, cela reviendrait à mettre en avant ou à généraliser l’emploi d’un terme neutre comme « l’enfant » au lieu de « il » ou « elle ».
« Le mot en lui-même est utile lorsqu’il est employé dans un contexte approprié », explique Niklas Jakobsson, journaliste suédois vivant à Amsterdam. Personnellement, je l’utilise lorsque je ne suis pas sûr du sexe de la personne ou quand je ne souhaite pas révéler le sexe de l’autre pour une raison lambda. Mais j’ai constaté que les médias l’employaient parfois à tort, pour commenter une image floutée à l’écran, en disant quelque chose comme "Hen sera..." pour faire le buzz. » Il ajoute : « En tant qu’individus, nous ne devrions pas nous définir par notre genre, donc à ce niveau je pense que le terme en lui-même est positif. Mais pour autant, les gens devraient avoir la possibilité de choisir le genre auquel ils veulent s’identifier. "Hen" ne devrait donc être utilisé que s’il s’agit bien de la préférence de l’autre. »
Évidemment, la langue n’est qu’un des moyens visant à promouvoir une plus grande égalité homme-femme et l’acceptation de tous. Par exemple, il existe également un pronom neutre en turc, « o », qui recouvre à la fois les sens de « il » et « elle » en français. Le Bangladesh reconnaît aussi depuis peu l’existence d’un troisième genre, « Hijra ».
Pourtant, personne n’affirmerait que ces pays sont parmi les plus égalitaires. En effet, la Turquie et le Bangladesh figurent respectivement aux 125e et 68e rangs dans le classement du rapport 2014 sur l'égalité des genres par le Forum économique mondial, tandis que la Suède est 4e, juste derrière ses voisins scandinaves l’Islande, la Finlande et la Norvège.
Comme dirait Jesper Lundqvist, la langue est simplement un outil de plus pour nous permettre de rendre la société plus ouverte et de favoriser l’égalité des genres. Ce à quoi je réponds : « hen har rätt ».
