I signed up for a Twitter account a couple of months back. But I really didn't get it. I gathered a few followers, started following a few people. It struck me as something you could either get really into and spend huge amounts of time on, or it just wasn't worth doing.
So I gave up!

It took me a while to know how it worked, but the time I spent tweeting or building up a network has proved worthwhile. I communicate with fellow translators and I must say is very rewarding. When you start you need to invest 30 minutes minimum every day though!

I signed up for Twitter about one and a half year ago, and I don't regret it.
It's simply a perfect way to exchange ideas in real time, keep yourself updated on new trends and build up your networks. As all tweets are indexed, they are also searchable on Google and other search machines, which means you can use Twitter as a marketing instrument, with carefully selected hashtags in your tweets.

You don't need to invest huge amounts of time to get a large network of translators. Quite a few translators have already set up defined lists of their followers, depending on their focus, which means that you can have one list for tweets from translators & linguists, one for art lovers, one for business news and so on. Another way to find fellow translators is to search for tweets with hashtags #xl8, #translation or #languages which will lead you directly to languages-related tweets.
In my point of view, Twitter is a perfect means to build up a network with colleagues. Highly recommendable! ▲ Collapse

Havent tried it, dont want to either. Just another internet program collecting personal info for marketing.
I only use Skype for interacting with other fellows or e-mail and sometimes, I even use the phone;-

I resisted Twitter at first, but I've found it useful in getting informed about what is going on, a bit like an RSS feed of news and opinions, especially if you don't have a lot of time. It all depends on who you follow and what you want to get out of it, of course. However...
Although I don't have my own acount (and don't intend to), I have found it useful sometimes for reading opinions or getting real-time information on certain topics, for example the recent air traffic controller strike in Spain. Some newspapers and news agencies have Twitter and it's interesting to read what they "tweet".

I do not need any social networking tool. Yet naturally. Maybe in the future? Maybe...Who knows?

I use twitter to meet other translators and interpreters and it is a good source of information. I think as long as you see it as just another source of networking/information gathering then it is a valuable tool.
Personally I don't find it interesting to read about the finer details of someone's day to day life, "just made a cup of tea", for example. But then the joy of twitter is that you decide who you want to follow.

Simply because I really don't need time to write on Twitter. Since I am always in front of PC all day long, I turn my PC off as soon as my work is done. And it is the best time of the day for me:)

I use twitter and facebook for friends and as a marketing tool, and have synchronised twitter with FB - cost efficient and very productive tools, which help to remind clients that you exist
