Russian term

Так постой ну уходи, повремени.

Russian to English Art/Literary Music Song
This is the first strophe of a song sung by Vika Tsiganova.
I try to translate and cannot be sure of the translation.
Can anyone tell me if the translation is all right?

Мы не знаем то, что будет
Время нас с тобой рассудит
И проверят наши чувства дни
За окном маячит осень
Грешница прощенье просит
Так постой ну уходи, повремени
За окном маячит осень
Грешница прощенье просит
Так постой ну уходи, повремени.

We don't know what'll turn out
Time will judge me and you
And days will verify our feelings
The autumn looms upon the window
The sinner asks for pardon
So hold on departing, wait a while
The autumn looms upon the window
The sinner asks for pardon
So hold on departing, wait a while.

Discussion

Kirill Semenov Oct 24, 2004:
"So hold on, don't go, and stay a bit" sounds quite in the rhytme. Also, it implies "don't make rush decisions" (on leaving forever), so maybe "So hold on, don't leave me, think once more" or smth like this.
Kirill Semenov Oct 24, 2004:
Yes, I believe all these options are correct and possible, but I'm bot a native English speaker, so I just don't know which option fits best the rhythm and style of the source. "Departing" seems not good word here to me, that's for sure.
Non-ProZ.com Oct 24, 2004:
Or, "So, hold on, don't go, stay a bit"?
Non-ProZ.com Oct 24, 2004:
To Kiril: How about "linger a while"?
Non-ProZ.com Oct 24, 2004:
Hi Vadim, you are right Vika sang "_" together, so I heard "_."
Vadim Khazin Oct 24, 2004:
Are you sure it is , not ?

So, hold on, do not leave, wait a while

Постой -- hold on (a lot of possible meanings, but "hold on" within the context)

НЕ уходи (not НУ) -- don't leave

повремени -- a bit old-fashioned from "подожди", wait a while

Or \"wait a bit\" for \"повремени\".
Peer comment(s):

agree Steffen Pollex (X) : "НЕ уходи" is right. "Ну уходи" would mean the opposite. :-)

exactly :)
agree Sara Noss : Yes! I've just been trying to sing it in english, but i've been told to shut up! ;-)

On my opinio, Vyka Tsyganova is not the best piece to sing (especially when your neighbors may hear you). It's like me trying to sing anything of Madonna's out loud. ;-)
