I believe only rivers have tributaries, not dams or lakes, or am I way off?
A tributary is a stream or river which flows into a mainstem (or parent) river. A tributary does not flow directly into a sea. Tributaries and the mainstem river serve to drain the surrounding drainage basin of its surface water and groundwater by leading the water out into an ocean or some other large body of water.

Considering a tributary stream is a river or stream that flows into a mainstream river and then into a dam, I would use the preposition "to".

: True, the stream flows to the dam, but it is just a contributing factor in the larger picture of the dam and its hinterland. IMO, "a tributary to " sounds wrong in this context. "a tributary that flows to" works because it has a verb.

: Why not "dam tributary stream"?

Because the text implies movement, the stream flow.

tributary of the dam
Dá para entender a dúvida, mas no português não seria diferente: contribui à represa, mas é tributário da represa.

Note from asker:
Thank you! Your arguments make sense when I think of the concrete situation here. Today this stream is part of the entire system and I can tell to what extent this stream effectively contributes to dam or if it rather benefits from it as it is also possible. So I will take the vie that the stream is part (belongs to ) the entire network of many other streams and rivers. Thank you both of you for helping me out over a weekend! If I still can give you all a grade, it will be always the maximum. Thanks! |
