Consider the plight of the Magellan Fund, flagship of the Fidelity mutual-fund group. Most of Magellan's investors thought it was an equity fund. But last year it turned out that the fund's star manager, Jeffrey Vinik, had invested heavily in bonds andcash, thereby depressing returns in a booming stockmarket. Mr. Vinik was forced to resign, and the fund's investors have been leaving in droves. In 1995, the villains were managers of american money-market funds, many of whom were caught out by Mexico's peso crisis at the end of 1994.

Fondul monetar este o forma specializata de fond mutual, care investeste in instrumente pe termene scurte (1 zi - 3 luni) si foarte lichide ale pietei monetare. De asemenea, se pot efectua plasamente - intr-o proportie redusa - si pe piata organizata de capital, dar pastrandu-se conditiile enuntate mai sus. Din aceasta cauza, fondurile monetare sunt o alternativa atractiva la contul bancar.

In Statele Unite, fond de investitii care investeste in instrumente financiare de credit pe termen scurt, foarte lichide, cum ar fi bonurile de trezorerie si efectele de comert. Ratele dobanzii variaza zilnic, dar valoarea activului net per unitate ramane constanta, in general la 1$, ceea ce face ca aceste fonduri sa fie cele mai sigure dintre toate tipurile de fonduri. Ele sunt disponibile atat in varianta impozabila, cat si in cea neimpozabila. Dividendele sunt calculate zilnic si platite sau reinvestite lunar.
