Vertical to me is (y), known as Sagital and (z) is depth, therefore the term y,z means front to back in the vertical plane. The vertical component is complex and most of my reconstruction work has focused mainly on the condyles being in the superior position, as this position is the most suitable, the easiest to repeat in tracings, and also renders the Lateral-pterygoid muscle at rest. It is the excepted
position of rest and can be found without manipulation, ** splint therapy **, or some form of deprogrammed that is made correctly from calculation to avoid it becoming a programmer. (That is of course if there are no joint disorders or other diagnosis that will require long term treatment.) There are also other positions that a reconstruction can be made to. Some are controversial and in the case of conformative dentistry, some may require making new restorations to the original mandible location.
