Given the largely mysterious ways in which profit is created in a globalized economy (Comaroff & Comaroff, 1999), price composition increasingly generates moral dilemmas.ì Price composites are now among the most fiercely debated topics of everyday life, from house prices to air fares, from items on sale on eBay to the pay of chief executives. People are thus constantly reminded how “all prices are fictions – literally the ** results of narratives of ** creation, addition, and subtraction” (Guyer, 2009, p. 204).
Fair trade is clearly an example of this phenomenon, and part of a broader trend of reflexivity toward the negative consequences of globalization that (some) consumers are seen as being at the vanguard of (Brown, 2013, pp. 16–18). Indeed, one prominent scholarly approach to fair trade argues that the practice is a result precisely of this sort of reflexivity (e.g. Micheletti, 2003; Raynolds, Murray, & Wilkinson, 2007).
