Dutch term

alfa's (in context)

Dutch to English Other Other
I'm looking for something light-hearted for 'alfa's' for a beginners' book on bridge written in a straightforward style. Art lovers, or is that too specific?

Wie spelen er allemaal bridge?

Scholieren, studenten, alfa’s, techneuten, juristen, ict-ers, ministers, truckers, beleggers, pensionado’s, kortom: iedereen.

To give you an idea of the 'lightheartedness level' required (!), here's what I have so far:

Schoolkids, students, xx, boffins, lawyers, IT geeks, ministers, truckers, investors, expat pensioners - just about anyone in fact.

Discussion

Tina Vonhof (X) Oct 26, 2006:
It's an accepted term in North-America (because many retire to Mexico, etc.) but maybe not in the UK.
MoiraB (asker) Oct 26, 2006:
Techno-nuts a good idea, but I'm not so sure about your pensionados. On UK sites, even with the language set to English, you seem to get nothing but Spanish pages. Not a term I've ever come across. Might just generalise it to pensioners, as that certainly seemed to be the main age group in the bridge club I was a member of in Holland!
Tina Vonhof (X) Oct 26, 2006:
Just a suggestion: I would translate techneuten as techno-nuts and leave pensionados as is.

brainiac

Zomaar een ideetje dat binnen de context past.
Geen referenties (behalve dan naar het gelijkluidende populair wetenschappelijke knalprogramma op Discovery...)

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Inspired me to opt for the more general 'intellectuals'. Thanks, everyone."

It's not awfully inspired but it might spur you on to think outside the box here

Artsies

As the first part of artsy-fartsy, plural...
Just a suggestion!
Peer comment(s):

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : Eigenlijk heeft alfa's niet specifiek met kunst te maken, maar ik vind dit toch wel een leuke vertaling.

Thank you!
disagree Kate Hudson (X) : the term is actually 'arty-farty' and is certainly not really flattering

It can be both 'arty-farty' and 'artsy fartsy', plus without the last part there is a stronger connotation with the Arts faculty of a university, i.e. the 'alfa's'.
