Dutch term

scholengroep

Dutch to English Other Education / Pedagogy schools
Can anyone help me with a good translation of 'scholengroep'?

Background: there is a tendency in the Netherlands at the moment for schools to merge. Although the individual school sites may retain their original identity, character, etc., once they belong to a 'scholengroep', they come under the centralised management of the groep. So you have, in effect, a number of schools whose only connection might be the fact that they are all managed by a single Board of Governors.

Is there a neat term for this concept in English? I find 'school group' a little unenlightening...

Michael Beijer Apr 12, 2014:
Notebook My ‘Notebook Nederlandse en Vlaamse onderwijstermen in het Engels’ has the following:

scholengroep:
groups of schools (BE) (i.e., a group of Flemish Community schools operating under a joint administrative structure)

scholengemeenschap:
1. combined school (zie ook: brede scholengemeenschap, smalle scholengemeenschap)
2. (samenwerkingsverband van scholen in het secundair onderwijs) (Vlaams) school cluster (group of schools providing secondary education in a particular geographical area)

School

This is one of those tricky problems we encounter from time to time, e.g. translation of a concept that has no real equivalent. My suggestion is to translate it just with school, e.g. the biggest local college in my area (here in the UK) recently merged with a number of smaller regional colleges and is now simply known under one - new - name. This college is indeed governed by one board of governors but has 4 or 5 smaller branches in surrounding towns. Internet searches on 'merged schools' show that these kind of schools are not referred to by a specific name such as 'scholengroep' but tend to change the actual name of the school only.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I think you're right - it is in fact just a single school - esp. from a management and legal perspective, albeit one which arose from a merger of several schools. The result is a school located across several sites. Where relevant to the context, I have therefore qualified the term as 'multi-site school' ('multi-campus school' is also an option). Thanks to all for your contributions."

consoldated school / consolidated association of schools

off the top of my head -- no time for google refs just now

neutral LouisV (X) : why not just 'a consolidated group of schools'?

Composite/comprehensive school

'Composite' in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
'Comprehensive' in the UK.

A 'scholengroep' and 'composite/comprehensive school' offers different types and levels of education, so that students of different ages and with different abilities (elementary, junior/senior high, vocational etc.) can attend. It is not a merger and, although they may share facilities, usually each school maintains a certain amount of independence.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Dave Calderhead : a UK comprehensive is a school with different streams - not a group of schools as such

In NL different streams (opleidingen) are often also different schools. In a 'scholengroep' they are bunched together in one location.

community college

In the Uk there are a lot of those, former comprehensives which now are community colleges and often include adult education etc.

Schoolsystem

In the US I worked in the public schoolsystem in a few counties. In essence these were all the elementary and high schools in the county except the private schools. This might also be an option.
