Croatian term
Diplomirao s izvrsnim uspjehom
Croatian to English
Other
Education / Pedagogy
znači puni termin je: Diploma zagrebačkog Sveučilišta s titulom preofesora engleskog jezika s postignutim izvrsnim uspjehom. Da li se to može prevesti B.A. in English language and literature, graduated with honors? pošto znam da with honors ima nekoliko značenja, da li se može upotrijebiti u ovom slučaju. Hvala unaprijed

(graduated ili sl.) with excellent academic record
ili received his B.A., M.A., B.A.(Hons) ili sl. .... with excellent academic record
... prema mojoj diskusiji, čini mi se dosta prikladno za CV i nekadašnju situaciju diplome s izvrsnim uspjehom:))

: 'excellent marks' is not used in university context, at least not in the US

your answer, without a doubt
'with honors' is superior to 'magna cum laude' or 'suma cum laude' in this case because it is less specific, as it is in Croatian. You'd need to now his GPA and/or thesis in order to know whether the guy graduated magna or suma cum laude.
Your other wording is correct as well, I'd just capitalize everything, i.e. B.A. in English Language and Literature

: I just wanted to write the same comment as Nadia. She's right, honors is a ONE-YEAR COURSE.

: That's absolutely correct, but that's exactly what the asker proposed. And, no, honors in this context is NOT a one-year course. ['First year honors' for instance, does exist in certain US colleges, but it does not have the same meaning]

graduated with a B.A. in English with the highest GPA
You cannot use " with honors" for someone who has graduated with the first degree. Honors is a ONE-YEAR COURSE (it's usually the best students who continue with the Honors after the first degree and then go onto the Masters ( B.A is a DEGREE - I don't know any University where you can be awarded a "diplomate degree")

: but we do not know if it is indeed 'the highest'. In addition, it is not idiomatic in EN. A numerical GPA could be reported, as in 'GPA of 3.80', but we never say 'with the highest GPA'. 'With honors' idiomatically captures the best grades, etc.

"With honors' does capture the best grades but in order to have it included in an official document you need to have completed adn additional course/programme. http://www.ucwv.edu/academics/student_honors/default.aspx

received his diploma with high honors; received his diploma magna cum laude
("graduated" is okay as well, but is less literal)
The "uspjehom" refers to honors, not grades per se.

The degree is the "diplomate" degree, not B.A. Am I not correct?

"graduated with excellent academic record" is simply not idiomatic in English. Therefore it should be avoided lest the reader sense that the translation was inept.

: diploma and 'high honors' are somewhat mutually exclusive. You'd have to say 'degree'. And why magna cum laude, why not suma ? You see my point? We should be less specific to match the original.
