Calling in:
It is an approach that minimizes any potential feelings of embarrassment or shame. It can be thought of an more collaborative approach that might reduce defensiveness. However, when used consistently with the same individual, it can also be seen as prioritizing relationship management, over stopping discrimination and advancing in equity. This approach can be used when there is an opportunity to go deeper and find a mutual understanding across difference or when we want to learn more, so it is more focused on reflection instead of reaction.

Calling out: É uma abordagem que se concentra em criar compromisso com a responsabilidade, mesmo que não seja motivada pelo desejo de envergonhar ou embaraçar. Essa abordagem provavelmente criará um choque inicial e admiração na pessoa que está recebendo conselhos, mas também enviará uma mensagem clara de que o comportamento é inaceitável. Essa abordagem também deve ser usada quando queremos evitar mais ofensas em qualquer situação específica.

If you are being called in or called out, remember we all have unconscious biases and a lot of awareness, practice and effort is required to avoid them.
You need to consider whom you’re dealing with, what their reaction might be, and what the political costs will be if you call them out. It might feel righteous to call people out, but no one wants to hear that they’re being sexist, racist, or otherwise offensive.
