English term

to see him to his eventual discharge

English to French Medical Medical (general)
Bonjour, je ne saisis vraiment pas le sens de cette phrase : to see him to his eventual discharge, et le contexte ne m'aide pas vraiment... Il s'agit d'une personne dans le coma, sous respiration artificielle et que des personnes viennent voir pour lui faire du magnétisme... Et il va beaucoup mieux grâce à ça...

"The nurses and other personnel observed the dedication of the family and friends administering Okada purification therapy and his progress to see him to his eventual discharge. Some of them inquired about the “energy healing.”""
merci d'avance

Tony M May 7, 2010:
Context? You're right, it is a bit tricky to unravel here, and I think only more context (if you have it) is going to be the solution.

The basic trouble is that 'eventual' in EN can have 2 different meanings; most commonly, it means 'at the end of a period of time' (the meaning it doesn't have in FR!) But it can also sometimes have the meaning of 'may possibly occur' (the usual meaning in FR).

So what we really need to know here is whether or not this person was eventually discharged? If he was discharged, then the meaning becomes clearer; but if he was not, then we can only assume it has the FR meaning: "with a view to a possible discharge (which may or may not actually happen)". Perhaps you can get some idea from the rest of your text?

La phrase est un peu bizarre, mais je dirais "et les progrès qui lui permettraient finalement de quitter l'hôpital". Discharge = congé, autorisation de sortie.

agree Lionel_M (X) : "sortie de l'hôpital" aussi peut-être
