Hi Catherine, the alternatives would be:

"Managing Director Sales" or

"General Manager Sales"
(http://www.indeed.co.uk/viewjob?t=General Manager - Sales&l=...

...you may find several variants including commas or hyphens
(e.g. "Managing Director, Sales")

Note from asker:
Thank you, Harald. Could I ask you to clarify what the alternatives are? Do you mean "General Manager" on its own, or "General Manager Sales"? Thanks.
Thanks, Harald.

Hello Andy, pub-quizzing again? I won't place any hyphens, but you find it in some of the ads, e.g. http://jobs.timesonline.co.uk/job/365049/general-manager-sal...
neutral Textklick : Sorry, not with this. Just Sales Director.

CSO Chief Sales Officer

Have come across this quite often. Term used in Britain and America and in international business.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Textklick : In the UK, CEOs and CFOs abound. Those who used to be appointed are now commissioned. However, IMHO, CSO has not quite caught on much yet (unless you can persuade us to the contrary).

Sales Director

I think this may be a bit old-fashioned now but used to be used for someone in charge of Sales at Board level.
Peer comment(s):

agree Textklick : Old-fashioned? The quality newspapers still seem to use the expression in recruitment ads.

Thanks. What I meant was that job titles seem to have got more wordy these days!

Marketing manager

another alternative
Peer comment(s):

disagree Textklick : Marketing covers a variety of responsibilites, of which sales is but one. Manager is also possibly a little understated.
